This message is for Lauren and all other interested parties. I’m playing tonight at the Kingpen Bar on Prytania and Upperline @9:30 with Blair. It’s free! and it’ll be a lot of fun. Lot’s of people are going and you should be among them. Listen Goldstein, I’ve been looking for you for days in regards to this issue and I’d like you to get back to me asap. I’m at work right now and it’s pretty cool. I’m typing this journal in my stepdad’s office which is pretty sweet and he asked me to take my brother Joey to Teen Court this Monday. For those of you who don’t know, Teen Court is a community service which allows under-age offenders to be punished and humiliated by their very own peers. Joey likes to go and be on the jury and sentence young pot smokers and kleptomaniac’s to 30 years community service. Let me tell you what happened last time I took Joey to Teen Court.
So, I walk Joey inside the courthouse building downtown. He gets a disgusting hotdog and a chocolate milk. As he’s eating his snack, the other children who volunteer for Teen Court begin filing in the building. Most of the children happen to be Black. Joey lives and Metairie and attends the New Orleans Jewish Day School so you can imagine that he doesn’t get a whole lot of exposure to Black people in general. As the children walk past us, Joey turns to me and says in full voice “Hey Annie, I was wondering, why are there so many Black people here?” I try desperately to shush him up but to no avail. This only piques his curiosity and he loudly exclaims, “Seriously! I’ve never seen so many Black people in my life!” Luckily, no one really paid attention to him. I have to take him back next Monday. I’ll keep you posted…
